Description of the method.

An alginate impression of the nose is made. A high quality impression is desirable but this is not always easy, since the patients often have severe locomotory handicaps and their breathing ability is reduced. The means that they are not able or do not want to lie down in supine position and thus one must accept a more upright position. To achieve a good result, the patient should be calm and well informed of the procedure. Facial movements during the making of the impression should be avoided. Especially movement of the nose since this has a significant influence on how the mask will fit.

The impression is examined and, if of the desired quality, is then poured out with dental stone. The mask material is presently a light curing resin that makes production easier. The individually made headgear is produced to the patient's requirements. Mask and headgear are then tried out on the patient and any necessary adjustments are made. The patient should come for training to the outpatient unite for a period of time after which the patient can continue at home The patient requires continous care for life and hospital visits several times per year. Individually adapted equipment significantly increases the patient's quality of life and means that the patient can function better socially and less need of hospital visits. Rhinitis or drying out of the nose is most frequent localized side effects. The use of simple unheated humidifiers, which have to be integrated into tube led to reversal of rhinitis.
